Centralized brains make sense when you need tight global policy, complex analytics, or when operations staff is small. Server-based access control with lightweight door I/O at the edge simplifies updates and reporting. Plan for partial offline behavior: what happens if the controller loses contact for 10 minutes, an hour, a day? Decide the grace windows for cached credentials and how to handle anti-passback across sites. Document it, test it, and make sure guards and helpdesk staff know what the blinking LED means.

Cameras have similar trade-offs. On-camera analytics are getting better, but most large deployments still rely on servers for the heavy lifting. I evaluate edge analytics by two tests: does it reduce WAN bandwidth in a meaningful way, and does it maintain enough accuracy to be worth the complexity? If not, centralize and keep the storage near capture to avoid hauling raw video across the core.

Identity integration: the quiet linchpin

Access systems age badly when they live outside corporate identity. Whenever possible, tie badges, biometric templates, and entitlements to HR and IAM data. You don’t need to boil the ocean. Start with a nightly import from the HR system and a simple role model: employee, contractor, visitor, vendor. Map those to access levels. Over time, refine it to departmental groups, temporary access windows, and project-based entitlements.

Biometric door systems complicate identity in useful ways. They cut card sharing and tailgating, but they add template lifecycle management. Decide if templates live centrally and sync to readers, or if you enroll at the edge. Central enrollment makes audits sane. Edge enrollment can be faster but tends to sprawl. For a government lab, we paired biometrics with card + PIN for sensitive zones. An IP-based surveillance setup benefits from tiered storage. Record continuously at a modest rate, then bump to higher frame rates and bitrates on motion or analytic triggers. Keep a few days of high-rate footage on fast disks, roll older material to cheaper storage. A brief field story: a warehouse that finally calmed down

One distribution center kept seeing random door relocks during peak shifts. Workers would badge, the door would click, then immediately relock as if a phantom REX hit. The site had PoE readers and intercoms, controllers in IDF enclosures, and a single UPS per closet.

We traced it to two issues. First, the access switches were near their PoE limit. When cold mornings hit and heater elements in outdoor devices spiked, the switch trimmed power. Second, the REX devices shared a cable run with high-draw magnetic locks. Induced voltage created spurious signals.
